Whisky Explorer
Driving Route
The Highlands is Scotland's largest Whisky producing region with some of the finest single malts. The Highlands has a long tradition of Whisky distilling.
The English Malt Tax of 1725 forced most of Scotland’s stills to cease production. Bringing in an age underground distilling and moonshine, when the distilleries operated under moonlight to avoid the prying eyes of the government excise men. In the 18th century there were as many as 800 illegal stills operating in the Highlands. Today, you can visit the distilleries, take the tours, meet the malt masters and learn the history of the famous dram. Remember don't drink any alcohol and drive!
