Blair Atholl
Blair Atholl is a small town built at the confluence of the River Garry and River Tilt. The gaelic origin of Blair Atholl's name comes from the unusual flatness of the surrounding land. Blair refers to the field upon which the town is located and Atholl means 'new ireland'. The history of the town and Scotland itself has been shaped by the Stewart and Murray Earls, Marquesses and Dukes of Atholl, who resided at Blair Atholl. Today the Duke of Atholl is the only man in Europe to have his own standing army, the Atholl Highlands. The town is steeped in Jacobite History and a great place for low-level walks.
